American journalist Evan Gershkovich filed an appeal against the decision to extend his detention in Russia until the end of November, according to court documents.
The Moscow City Court extended his detention on Thursday, prompting strong reactions from US government officials and the Wall Street Journal, for which Gershkovich works.
The court's website announced today that Geršković's defense filed an appeal, reports Slobodna Evropa.
In June, the court rejected his appeal against an earlier ruling to keep him behind bars until the end of August.
Geršković was arrested at the end of March while on a journalistic assignment and charged with espionage.
He and the Wall Street Journal have denied that he spied in Russia, and the US government has declared him illegally detained and demanded his immediate release.
Gerskovic is the first American journalist arrested in Russia on espionage charges since the end of the Cold War and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
