Polish and American officials signed an agreement today in Warsaw to build the country's first nuclear power plant, which seeks to reduce the use of polluting fossil fuels.
Prime Minister Mateus Morajecki said that the power plant in Pomerania, near the Baltic Sea, will be a stable and clean source of electricity.
The consortium of companies Westinghouse and Bechtel signed the agreement with the Polish state company Polskie Elektrovnie Jadrove (PEJ).
The German federal states bordering Poland have previously said they oppose the construction of the power plant 280 kilometers from the border.
Within Poland, opposition to the nuclear program is not strong. While some environmentalists oppose it, even the Green Party is divided on the issue. It's a reflection of how devastating climate change has convinced some environmentalists to embrace nuclear power as a solution.
Poland plans to spend $40 billion to build two nuclear power plants with three reactors each, the last of which will be commissioned in 2043.
The deal with the US is for the first three reactors of the Pomerania plant, which officials say should start producing electricity in 2033.
Poland, which is among the worst in Europe in terms of air pollution, has been planning for decades to build a nuclear power plant that will replace outdated coal-fired thermal power plants. This has become urgent since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, during which Moscow uses energy for economic and political pressure on the countries of Europe.
