Switzerland's populist right, anti-immigration and anti-EU, is leading according to opinion polls ahead of today's parliamentary elections, in the context of Europe's migrant crisis and growing fears linked to the risks of attacks in Europe.
Polling stations are only open for two or three hours in the morning because the vast majority of Swiss people vote by mail.
The first projection of the results is expected at 16.00, local time.
Switzerland, with a population of about 8,8 million, elects its 200 members of the National Council (lower house of Parliament) by proportional voting, and its 46 senators of the Council of States (upper house) by majority vote.
In the lower house, the right-wing party UDC (Democratic Union of the Center) should, according to polls, consolidate its position as the leading political force to the detriment of the Liberal-Radical (PLR), while the Greens should give way to the Socialists (PS).
The Greens are not expected to repeat the success of the 2019 elections.
The climate is one of the main concerns of the Swiss, but the covid-19 pandemic stopped the "green wave", which also brought up the issue of citizens' purchasing power, under the influence of inflation and especially due to the increase in health insurance contributions.
