The new Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, announced today that he is suspending arms deliveries to Ukraine and limiting Slovak support to the neighboring country "to humanitarian and civilian aid".
"We consider aid to Ukraine only as humanitarian and civilian aid, we will not supply arms to Ukraine," Fico said a day after becoming head of the coalition government linked to the far-right pro-Russian party.
The Kremlin separately assessed today that Slovakia's decision to stop arms deliveries to Ukraine will not change the conflict in any way, given the minimal share of that country in Western arms deliveries to Kiev.
"Slovakia's share in the delivery of weapons (to Kiev) was not really that big, and therefore it will not affect the whole process at all," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
He once again accused the US of fueling the conflict by providing aid to Ukraine.
Yesterday, Fico assumed the office of prime minister for the fourth time after his left-wing Smjer party won the parliamentary elections in Slovakia on September 30.
Fico formed a parliamentary majority by signing a coalition government agreement with the left-wing Hlas party and the ultra-nationalist Slovak National Party, which is strongly pro-Russian.
Fitz's victory could mark a dramatic turnaround in the country's foreign policy and could damage the fragile unity in the European Union and NATO.
Fico will have his first chance to present his views at a two-day summit of EU leaders in Brussels starting on Thursday.
Slovakia, a country of 5,5 million people, has so far been unwavering in its support for Ukraine since Russia occupied large parts of the country in February 2022. She gave weapons to Kiev and opened the borders for refugees.
