Two activists of the environmental movement "Just Stop Oil" (Just Stop Oil) who oppose fossil fuels were arrested in London, because today in the National Gallery in London they broke the protective glass of the painting "Venus in the mirror" by the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez with hammers. .
The reason for their action today is the permission of the British authorities to search for gas and oil in the North Sea.
The National Gallery announced that curators had removed the painting to assess its condition after the attack.
That painting by Velasquez from the middle of the 17th century, which is considered the only remaining act of that Spanish painter, was also damaged in 1914, when it was cut up by an activist for women's suffrage - the "Just Stop Oil" movement reminded today.
Activists of that environmental movement, who usually obstruct traffic on the roads, last year in the National Gallery threw tomato soup at the famous "Sunflowers" by Vincent van Gogh, and in the museum in The Hague they stuck to the protective glass of the painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. .
