"X has become a weapon of mass destruction of democracy"

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced that she will leave the social network X, formerly Twitter, because that platform, according to her assessment, has become a "weapon for the mass destruction of democracy" in recent years.

Without mentioning the platform's owner Ilon Musk by name, Hidalgo labeled him responsible for the changes that followed after he took over the company in October 2022, the "Politiko" portal reported.

"This platform and its owner are acting deliberately to exacerbate tensions and conflicts," she told X Network, adding that the social network has become "a huge sewer around the world."

"It is clear that it is a political project that wants to act beyond democracy and its values, in favor of a powerful private interest," added the socialist mayor and added:

"I refuse to support such scams".

Hidalgo is the first among prominent French politicians to announce that she is leaving the platform.

Social network X has faced numerous accusations of misinformation since Musk bought the company, culminating in recent weeks with content about the Israel-Hamas war.

That concern prompted the European Commission to announce that it would "temporarily suspend advertising on that platform," Politiko reported in an internal memo from the Commission.
