Former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Walesa was transferred to the hospital due to a severe form of covid-19, his associate said today.
A post on Valensa's Facebook page showed a picture of him in bed with an oxygen mask with the caption "I have covid".
His associate Marek Kačmar told Polish media that Valensa, 80, is seriously ill but under good care at a hospital in Gdańsk, the Baltic port where he lives.
This is the second time Valensa has covid.
In the 1988s, Walesa led the pro-democracy Solidarity movement that led to the peaceful overthrow of communism in Poland nine years later and inspired other countries to break away from Moscow's dominance.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. In 1990-1995, Walesa served as the first elected president of democratic Poland.
