The Ukrainian authorities today called for a reduction in electricity consumption after an attack on a thermal power plant near the front, in the first call of this type before the arrival of winter and due to the threat of new Russian attacks.
"On the afternoon of December 7, the enemy hit a thermal power plant in the front line zone," the Ukrainian energy ministry said, without specifying the exact location of the power plant.
As it is added, the equipment was "severely damaged" and two electrical units stopped working.
It is stated that since the operation of those two units has been interrupted, with the drop in outside temperature, there may be temporary power shortages in the network.
The Ministry urged consumers to use electricity wisely and sparingly.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmihal wrote on his Facebook account that the shortage is related to the drop in temperature, urgent repairs and limited operation of solar power plants due to cloudy weather.
"The government and companies from the energy sector call on everyone to reduce electricity consumption, especially from 9.00:19.00 a.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.," wrote the prime minister.
He recommended Ukrainians not to turn on devices that consume a lot of energy at the same time, to postpone washing clothes in machines for the night, as well as to reduce advertising lighting in shops.
"All this could help us avoid the introduction of restrictions," he added.
Last winter, Russia carried out a campaign of targeted bombing of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with the aim of forcing the population and authorities to give in.
