More than 20 senior European politicians have called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to investigate allegations of theft in the December elections in Serbia.

"We call on the EU to conduct an independent investigation into all reported electoral irregularities and claims of theft," European officials said in the letter, which one of the signatories, Michael Roth, shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

In addition to Roth, among the 24 signatories of the letter is Jean-Louis Bourlange, as well as the presidents of the foreign policy committees of Italy, Denmark and Luxembourg.

They called on the EU to independently investigate allegations of electoral fraud and make recommendations to ensure free and fair elections in Serbia.

They also stated that, depending on the findings of the investigation, the EU should request the calling of new elections in Serbia.

"Our common goal is to see Serbia as a member of the European Union in this decade," the letter states.

The letter was addressed to top EU officials, including von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and European Parliament President Robert Metzol.

Among the signatories of the letter are representatives of Ukraine, Moldova and Great Britain, which are not members of the EU.

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) announced on December 18 that the elections were marked by the abuse of public funds, the spread of fear and the media dominance of Aleksandar Vučić.

On January 17, the European Parliament held a debate on the last elections in Serbia, where it was announced that the European Commission expects Serbia to transparently investigate all complaints about irregularities during the elections held on December 17 last year.

The elections for Serbia will be discussed again next week in the European Parliament.

The discussion will be held in the foreign policy committee of the European Parliament, at a meeting scheduled for January 23.

After the discussion on January 17, it is expected that the resolution of the European Parliament on the elections in Serbia will be voted on at the plenary session in February.
