Associates: Navalnji in solitary confinement for ten days because he did not immediately introduce himself to the prison guard during roll call

Associates of jailed opposition politician Alexei Navalny stated on January 22 that this critic of the Kremlin was placed in solitary confinement for ten days because he did not "immediately introduce himself to the prison guard" during the roll call.

This is the second time that Navalny has been placed in solitary confinement at the "Polar Wolf" correctional prison colony in the Russian Arctic region, where he was transferred last month. Last Sunday, he completed a seven-day solitary confinement for the same "misdeed".

This is the 25th time Navalny has been in solitary confinement since his imprisonment in 2021, on charges he and his supporters in Russia and abroad say are politically motivated.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, marking the third anniversary of his imprisonment on what he says are politically motivated charges, said on January 17, 2024 that the power model created in Russia by President Vladimir Putin was "unsustainable because it was built on lies".

Navalny, who nearly died from poisoning he blames on Russian security operatives acting on Putin's orders, was originally sentenced to two and a half years in prison for violating the terms of an earlier parole while recuperating abroad.

The Kremlin has denied involvement in Navalny's poisoning.

In March 2022, Navalny received a nine-year prison sentence on charges of contempt and embezzlement by fraud, which he and his supporters have repeatedly dismissed as politically motivated charges.

Navalny's anti-corruption foundation and its network of regional offices were labeled "extremist" organizations and banned after his arrest, leading to another trial against him on charges of extremism.

In August 2023, a court extended Navalny's prison sentence to 19 years and sent him to a stricter "special regime" facility from the maximum security prison where he was held. Last month, Navalny was transferred to such a prison in Russia's Arctic region.
