Russia launched 14 drones and five missiles at Ukraine overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Thursday, and air defense systems destroyed 11 drones, Reuters reports.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced on its Telegram channel that Russia was targeting mainly targets in the south of Ukraine.
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram that two people were injured during the attack on the Black Sea port city.
"Despite the effective work of air defense in repelling enemy attacks, an industrial facility was hit in Odesa, and residential facilities and civilian infrastructure were damaged," Kiper said.
Russia also targeted Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, with five S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles, the air defense said.
Russia has intensified its missile attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine in recent weeks, causing numerous deaths, injuries and property damage.
According to Ukrainian officials, between December 29, 2023 and January 2, 2024 alone, Russia launched more than 500 Iranian-made drones into Ukrainian cities.
This wave of attacks has increased pressure on Ukraine's air defense capabilities and ammunition reserves, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to step up calls for allies to help Kiev.
The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
As a result of the war, thousands of people died and millions were displaced from their homes.
