At least 100 people have been detained across Russia for attending vigils and rallies following reports of the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, according to OVD-Info, a human rights group that monitors Russian repression, CNN reports.
There were detentions across the country, including in the cities of Murmansk, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg.
At numerous vigils across the country, people paid their respects to Navalny, including laying flowers and carrying posters, according to videos on social media and news agencies, CNN reports.
Police can also be seen ushering some participants into police vans.
OVD-Info announced that some of those detained were released.
The prosecutor's office in Moscow warned earlier Friday that demonstrations in the capital were not allowed and that participants could be placed under administrative arrest.
