The Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure, Oleksandr Kubrakov, today described the blockade of the border crossings to Poland, which was organized by Polish farmers, as a "security threat".
"Blocking the border represents a direct threat to the security of the defending country. Such actions have a negative impact on our confrontation with the common enemy Russia," Kubrakov wrote on Facebook.
"All exports have been affected. We can say that the situation is critical. Not only are agricultural products blocked, but they (protesters) are blocking everything. There are trucks with fuel. A few days ago, there were cases where protesters did not let go of several trucks loaded with weapons." said the minister on national television.
As the ministry announced, six checkpoints were blocked on the Polish side of the border.
"The most critical situation is at the Jagodin-Dorohusk checkpoint, where freight traffic has been completely stopped. Humanitarian aid, perishable goods and fuel have been stopped," said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Sergij Derkač.
According to Michal Derus, spokesman for the Tax Administration in Lublin, Poland, there are currently about 600 trucks waiting to leave Poland at the Dorohusk border crossing, and the estimated waiting time for this number of trucks is about 232 hours.
Not a single truck has entered Poland (from Ukraine), so it can be assumed that it is a total blockade, Derus said.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure specifically condemned the blockade of passenger buses.
"Women and children who became refugees after fleeing the war and who return home for various reasons cannot become hostages of commercial interests," said Kubrakov and added that he expects concrete actions from his Polish colleagues to avoid such situations.
Since last November, Polish farmers have regularly blocked several border crossings with Ukraine to protest unfair competition from their neighbor.
Poland has helped Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, but friction over a ban on Ukrainian grain imports has strained relations between the allies.
In recent days, Poland has indicated the possibility of introducing additional import bans on Ukrainian agricultural products to protect its farmers.
