US President Donald Trump said today that he did not criticize British Prime Minister Theresa May in an interview with the Sun tabloid in which he questioned her Brexit plan and praised her inner-party rival Boris Johnson.
At a joint press conference at the Checkers estate, the residence of the British Prime Minister, Trump said today that he "has a lot of respect" for Theresa May and that he would "be fine" with any way of leaving Great Britain from the EU, the Associated Press reports.
He added that the Sun did not publish the "big things" he said about May in that interview.
May politely disagreed with Trump's warning that her Brexit plan could threaten the post-Brexit US-UK free trade deal.
She said her plan provides a platform for an "ambitious" trade deal between the two countries.
Last night, after arriving in Great Britain, Trump told The Sun that the British plan for trade relations with the EU after Brexit will "probably kill" the free trade agreements between Washington and London.
In the interview, he also praised May's rival in the Conservative Party, former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who he said he had no doubt could be a "great prime minister".
The head of the White House said today that May will make a decision on Brexit, and that he assures her that the US "can trade" and that "there are no restrictions" regarding trade with Great Britain.
May praised the strength of the US-UK bond.
"It is solely our responsibility to ensure that transatlantic unity survives," said the British prime minister.
Both Trump and May have indicated they hope to reach a bilateral trade deal soon.
