The candidate of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Ekrem Imamoglu, is leading in the mayoral election in the country's largest city, according to Turkish media, based on partially counted ballots.
Turkey's NTV reported that Imamoglu, the current mayor of Istanbul, has the support of 49,09 percent of voters based on 3,67 percent of processed ballots, reports Reuters.
Former minister Murat Kurumza, a candidate of the Justice and Development Party (AK), the ruling party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has the support of 42,83 percent of the electorate.
Turkish citizens today elected mayors, district heads and other local officials who will hold office for the next five years, including leaders in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
The main competing parties are the ruling AK, the CHP, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Good Party and the People's Democratic Party (DEM).
