Russian special forces killed two people suspected of planning terrorist attacks in an exchange of fire in the south of the country, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee announced today.
The suspects opened fire on the special forces of the Federal Security Service (FSB) after they were blocked on the outskirts of Nalychik, the capital of the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.
They did not give details about the attacks that were allegedly planned.
Security measures across Russia have been heightened following a March 22 terrorist attack near Moscow that killed 145 people.
The responsibility for the attack was then taken by the Islamic State.
Kabardino-Balkaria is located in the North Caucasus region where Islamic extremists have operated for decades.
