Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the support of the United States, Britain and France to Ukraine poses serious strategic risks that have increased the risk of a direct confrontation between the world's largest nuclear powers, reports Reuters.
Lavrov said that the United States and NATO are obsessed with the idea of inflicting a "strategic defeat" on Russia and that there are risks in such a confrontation that could lead to an increased level of nuclear danger.
"The Westerners are dangerously teetering on the edge of a direct military conflict between the nuclear powers, which has catastrophic consequences," Lavrov said.
The United States and its allies say they are helping Ukraine fend off Russian aggression and that it is Russia that is exacerbating tensions between East and West, including repeating warnings about the danger of nuclear conflict.
Lavrov said: "The fact that the 'troika' of Western nuclear states are among the key sponsors of the criminal regime in Kiev, the main initiators of various provocative steps, is of particular concern. We see serious strategic risks in this, leading to an increase in the level of nuclear danger."
The three Western countries with nuclear weapons are the United States, Britain and France.
