Britain has started detaining migrants who will be deported to Rwanda

British authorities have begun detaining migrants in preparation for deportation to Rwanda in the next nine to 11 weeks, the government announced, laying the groundwork for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's flagship immigration policy.

In April, Parliament approved a law that paves the way for sending asylum seekers to Rwanda if they stay in Britain without permission, and Sunak wants the first flights to Rwanda to take off already in July, reports Hina.

So far this year, more than 7.500 migrants have arrived in England by ship from France. The government believes that this policy will deter people from making the dangerous journey across the Channel. Last week, for example, five people died trying to cross the dangerous canal.

Human rights charities and unions opposed to the policy are expected to launch new legal moves to prevent planes from taking off for Rwanda, after the UK Supreme Court ruled the policy illegal last year.

The spokesperson of the organization said that their helpline received calls from "several dozens of people" who still do not know who has been designated for deportation by the first flights or when they will begin to be implemented.
