Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that the Ukrainian army is achieving "tangible results" in the northeastern Kharkiv region, where the Russian army has been on the offensive since May 10.
"In the Kharkiv region, our forces are destroying the occupier, the results are tangible," Zelenski said in his evening address.
Since the beginning of the offensive, Russian forces have managed to take more places in the area that borders Russia and forced Kiev to send reinforcements there, at a time when the Ukrainian army is already short of manpower and equipment.
Earlier, Zelensky said that the Russian offensive on Kharkiv could be the "first wave" of a wider offensive to capture Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last Sunday that the goal is to form a "buffer zone" on Ukrainian territory, to stop Ukrainian bombing of Russian border zones.
Today, the spokesman of the Ukrainian forces in the Kharkiv region, Nazar Volochin, said that Kiev managed to "stabilize the situation in that area, especially in the city of Vovchansk", which is at the center of the fighting.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Army announced this afternoon that the fighting continues in the north of the city of Vovchansk and in the Staricija sector and that the situation is under control.
However, Zelensky said tonight that heavy fighting is still taking place in the east of the country in the Donetsk region.
According to the afternoon briefing of the Ukrainian General Staff, the Russian army maintains a "high level of intensity" in the Pokrovsk sector in the Donetsk region, where during the day it made 27 attempts to break through the Ukrainian defenses.
"The situation is still tense but under control," announced the Ukrainian General Staff.
