Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian army managed to regain the territories previously occupied by Russian troops in the Kharkiv region in the north-east of the country.
In his video address on Friday evening, Zelensky said that "our soldiers managed to take combat control over the border area where the Russian occupiers entered."
Zelensky's comments contradict those made by Russian officials. A member of the lower house of the Russian parliament, Viktor Vodolacki, said that Russian forces now control more than half of the town of Vovchansk, five kilometers inside the border, Russian state news agency Tass reported.
It is not possible to independently confirm these statements of his.
Vodolacki also added that once Vovchansk is captured, Russian forces will move on the towns of Slavyansk, Kramatorsk and Pokrovsk in the neighboring Donetsk region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Russian military's goal is to create a "buffer zone" in the Kharkiv region to prevent Ukrainian cross-border attacks.
The city of Kharkiv, which is the capital of the region of the same name, is about 20 kilometers from the Russian border.
