Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Russian forces are concentrating their attacks on the eastern region of Donetsk, rather than the Kharkiv region in the northeast, which was the target of an offensive launched last month.
"The main part of the fighting and the biggest attacks are taking place in the Donetsk region. In fact, Russian attacks are concentrated there," Zelensky said in his daily message on social networks.
In 2022, Russia announced the annexation of the area, although it does not have full control over it.
Zelensky said that a meeting was held in Kiev with the chief commanders of the Ukrainian army after returning to the country after visiting several European cities as well as Singapore and the Philippines.
Russian forces made their biggest territorial breakthrough in 18 months during a major ground offensive in the Kharkiv region that began on May 10, capturing several border villages and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
Ukraine has sent reinforcements and equipment to the zone at a time when it is short on manpower and ammunition.
The mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, said that Russia carried out 76 airstrikes on the city in May, that is, almost three times more than in April. Some analysts believe that the Russian offensive in that area could hide an attempt to penetrate elsewhere on the front line.
