An American citizen (55) was found dead on the Greek island of Matraki, the police said, which is the third death of a tourist in a week accompanied by unusually warm weather, reports Reuters.
Temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius earlier this month, just as the holiday season kicked off on Greece's remote beaches, ancient sites and mountain trails.
The early heatwave coincided with a spate of disappearances and deaths of tourists across the Mediterranean country, highlighting the dangers of heat exposure.
"There is a common pattern - everyone went for a walk in the high temperatures," Petros Vasilakis, a police spokesman for the southern Aegean, told Reuters.
The body of the British TV presenter, Michael Moseley, was found on June 9 on the island of Simi, after a four-day search operation by planes, drones and boats.
He was walking alone in the high temperatures before he disappeared.
The police did not reveal the identity of the dead American, whose body was found near the beach on Matraki on Sunday. He was flown to the island of Corfu where an autopsy will be performed, a police official told Reuters.
A Dutch tourist, 74, was found dead on the island of Samos on Saturday, and two hikers were found dead on Crete on June 5.
Rescue teams were also searching for two French women, aged 73 and 64, on the island of Sikinos and an American policeman (59) on Amorgos.
"Two search operations are underway on other islands. Police, firefighters and volunteers have been deployed and are being assisted by a drone and a rescue dog," Vasilakis said.
