Incidents at a rally for the rights of the LGBT community in Kyiv

Two people were attacked with tear gas today at the march for the rights of transgender people in Kyiv, the French Press agency reported on the spot and added that the rally was interrupted by a group of several dozen supporters of the extreme right.

Demonstrators carried rainbow flags and banners reading "Stop transphobia" at the rally.

Far-right supporters threw firebombs at the protesters as well as tear gas.

The police then directed the protesters to enter a metro station, which was closed, in order to prevent further violence.

Homophobia is very present in Ukraine, but the pro-European authorities in Kiev have said they are determined to show tolerance, and have allowed gay parades, as well as various other gatherings for the rights of the LGBT community.
