Five people were killed, including two children, in an attack by a Ukrainian drone on a Russian village near the border of the two countries, the governor of Russia's Kursk region announced today.
Governor Alexey Smirnov wrote on Telegram that an unmanned aerial vehicle hit a house in the village of Gorodische, in the Kursk region of Russia, a few kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
The attack was carried out by a "copter" type drone, the governor added, and it is a small device that can carry grenades and other explosives and drop them on a target.
Since the start of the conflict in February 2022, the two warring parties have been using drones extensively, including larger ones with a range of several hundreds of kilometers.
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian territory this year, targeting both energy sites it says supply the Russian military and Russian towns and villages near the border.
Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a new major ground offensive in the Kharkiv region, in northeastern Ukraine, with the aim of creating a "buffer zone" and pushing back Ukrainian forces, in order to protect Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, from artillery attacks.
The Kursk region, where this morning's attack took place, is further north, opposite the Ukrainian region of Sumy, which is controlled by Kiev.
