Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed his plea to the West for advanced air defense systems and long-range weapons after at least five people were killed in a July 3 Russian missile attack on the Dnieper.

"Only two things can stop this Russian terror - modern air defense systems and the long-range capabilities of our weapons," Zelensky wrote in English on the social network X.

"The world can protect lives, and that requires determination from leaders. A determination that can and must make protection from terrorism the norm again."

The Ukrainian leader has long called for better air defense and weapons systems, and the latest request came on June 30, after a Russian missile attack killed seven people and wounded 35 others in the city of Vilnius, in the southern region of Zaporozhye.

At least 3 people were also wounded in the attack on July 34, according to Zelenski.

Fourteen houses were destroyed in the attacks, Serhiy Lisak, the governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, said in a message on Telegram. He added that the attack caused several fires in the city.

"The enemy continues its insidious attacks. It sent rockets and attack drones. Unfortunately, it was not without consequences. Three people were killed," Lisak said on social media.

Separately, Ukraine's air force said it shot down five missiles, including an Iskander-K cruise missile, and six drones, five of which were Shahid kamikaze drones. It is said that the attack was mainly aimed at the Dnieper.

This is the third time that Dnieper has been targeted in the last five days. A high-rise building was destroyed in the attack on June 28, while at least 12 people were wounded in the drone attack on July 1.

Russia also shelled the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporozhye early on July 3, destroying 14 houses and injuring one man. A few days earlier, Russia attacked the city of Vilnyansk in Zaporozhye, killing seven civilians.

On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had shot down a total of ten Ukrainian drones in three regions, including five in Belgorod, four in Bryansk and one in Moscow. The ministry added that two unmanned boats headed for Novorossiysk in the Black Sea were sunk.

Russia has been targeting Ukraine's power grid for months, causing frequent blackouts.

In March, Prime Minister Denis Šmihal said that 80 percent of the country's thermal energy production capacity had been destroyed. Around the same time, the Ministry of Energy announced that the thermal power plants controlled by Centroenerho and Ukridroenerho were badly damaged.

Last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the European Union to increase electricity exports to Ukraine, as well as to supply necessary equipment and other resources for repairs.

Over the past few months, Ukraine has increasingly targeted fuel production sites inside Russia, mostly oil processing facilities that work for the Russian military.
