Vogan Getting has announced that he will resign as the Prime Minister of Wales after months of turbulence in the Sened - the Welsh Parliament, the British newspaper The Guardian reports.
The outlet said that Gething's resignation comes after four Welsh ministers stepped down from their posts in an apparently calculated move to force him to resign.
Getting, 50, the first black leader of a European country, refused to resign in June despite a vote of no confidence.
He assumed the role of prime minister in March.
The vote in the Senate was called by the Conservatives over more than £200.000 in donations given to Getting's campaign by a company owned by a man previously convicted of environmental offences.
Getting, who is from Labour, has also come under pressure over the sacking of Hannah Blittin as Minister for Social Partnerships, citing leaked text messages from her which appeared to show he was advocating the deletion of messages during the Covid pandemic.
Before resigning, Getting faced another potentially damaging vote in the Senate on Wednesday after the Welsh Conservatives tabled a motion to try to force him to release the evidence he used to oust Blithin.
"This morning I took the difficult decision to begin the process of stepping down as leader of the Welsh Labor Party and, as a result, as First Minister. Having been elected as leader of my party in March, I had hoped that there would be a period of reflection over the summer under my leadership , overhauls and renovations. Now I understand that this is not possible," said Getting
After thanking those who supported him, he hit out at his critics.
"The increasing claims that there was some kind of injustice are pernicious, politically motivated and obviously untrue. In 11 years as a minister, I have never made a decision for personal gain. I have never abused my ministerial duties," said Getting.
He said that his integrity is important to him and that he has not compromised it.
"I'm sorry that the burden of proof is no longer an important commodity in the language of our politics. I hope that can change, he said.
Getting said he would set a timetable for electing a new leader of the Labor Party.
