A video posted on social media today and confirmed by Reuters shows a convoy of burnt-out Russian military trucks along a highway in the Kursk region of southern Russia, where Ukrainian forces launched a major incursion this week.
We warn that the video and photos may be disturbing.
Reuters reports that about 15 trucks could be seen in the video, including one with the "Z" sign that Russia uses as a symbol of its "special military operation" in Ukraine.
It seemed, as the agency adds, that some trucks contained corpses.
Reuters says it was able to confirm the location as the village of Oktjabrskoye, based on the buildings, trees and road layout, but was unable to determine exactly when the video was taken.
Ukrainian forces breached the border with Russia on Tuesday in a shock counteroffensive, following months of gradual Russian advances in eastern Ukraine, nearly two and a half years after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine.
Chief of the Military Staff Valery Gerasimov informed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that Russian troops and forces of the FSB security service had halted the advance and would push the Ukrainians back to the border.
Reuters reports that official statements, military blogger accounts and videos posted on social media indicate that Russia is still struggling to achieve that goal, nearly 48 hours later.
The Ministry of Defense stated in a statement that its forces "continue to repel the attempted invasion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the territory of the Russian Federation."
The Russian authorities have declared a federal state of emergency in the Kursk region.
