At least four people have been killed and 24 wounded in an attack that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says was carried out by Russia on a supermarket in Kostyantinovka, a city in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.
"Russian terrorists hit an ordinary supermarket and a post office. There are people under the ruins. A rescue operation is underway and everything will be done to save them," Zelenski said on the Iks platform.
"It is currently known that four people have died. At least 24 people have been wounded. Russia will be held accountable for this terror, and we will do our best to ensure that the world continues to stand with Ukraine in supporting our defense and saving the lives of our people." Zelensky said.
Vadim Filashkin, head of the regional military administration, wrote on Telegram that it was an artillery attack.
"The Russians shelled the city with artillery, hitting a supermarket. This is another targeted attack on a place of gathering of people, another terrorist act by the Russians," Filashkin wrote on Telegram.
Pictures from the scene show black smoke rising over the smoldering remains of the supermarket, Radio Free Europe (RSE) reports in English.
The emergency services continue with the rescue operation, added Filashkin.
Moscow forces hold a large part of the Donetsk region. Areas controlled by Ukraine are regularly under Russian shelling and airstrikes.
The region is one of the fiercest theaters of war, as Russia targets sites in the direction of the strategic eastern logistics hub of Pokrovsk.
