Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow, and Russian air defense units destroyed at least ten drones, the mayor of Podolsk, located 38 kilometers south of the Russian capital, said early Wednesday.
"Air defense systems continue to repulse attacks by enemy aircraft. Some of them were destroyed over Podolsk. This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow by drones. We are still monitoring the situation," Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram.
According to the first information, there were no injuries and no damage was recorded, added Sobjanin.
Ukraine has repeatedly sent one or two drones towards Moscow in the last few months, each time without significant damage, writes Reuters.
However, this latest attack appears to be bigger than the one in May last year, when at least eight drones were destroyed over the capital, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to say that Kiev was trying to provoke and scare Russia.
Russian officials rarely provide full details of the attacks, mostly reporting only drones destroyed by their air defense units.
Both Russia and Ukraine rarely reveal the full extent of the damage that occurs as a result of each other's attacks, except in cases where residential or civilian infrastructure is damaged or when a civilian is killed, Reuters reminds.
The aforementioned attack on Moscow is part of a larger attack by drones from Ukraine, Russian officials noted, given that the air defense system stopped 18 drones over the Bryansk region in southwestern Russia and several more over other areas. However, no damage was reported there either.
Reuters could not immediately verify the reports, and Ukraine has not yet commented on them.
In recent months, Kiev has stepped up airstrikes on Russian territory and says it is doing so to destroy key infrastructure needed for war operations. They also state that their attacks are a response to continuous Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory.
