Russia accused six British diplomats of spying and decided to expel them from the country.
Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said the decision was made to withdraw their credentials because they allegedly collected intelligence and were involved in subversive activities.
The FSB states that they have received documents indicating that diplomats were sent to Russia by a department of the British Foreign Office "whose main task is to inflict a strategic defeat" on Russia.
Russian state television carried a statement from a Russian FSB official who confirmed that they would be expelled.
The news comes just two days after the US and UK pledged nearly $1,5 billion in additional aid to Ukraine, and Ukrainian officials are appealing to be allowed to use Western weapons for further purposes inside Russia.
The British Embassy in Moscow did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by The Associated Press.
