The German police in the federal state of Bavaria arrested a Syrian man on the charge of preparing an attack with an Islamist background against soldiers of the German Armed Forces (Bundesver).
"The 27-year-old suspect was preparing a machete attack with the intention of killing Bundeswehr soldiers in the city center of Hof," the state attorney's office in Munich said.
The statement said that the arrested Syrian planned to attack the soldiers during their lunch break with the intention of "killing as many soldiers as possible".
"Thus, the suspect, who is assumed to be a follower of radical Islamist ideology, wanted to spread fear and panic among the citizens," it was announced.
The Syrian, for whom it is not stated when and under what circumstances he arrived in Germany, was arrested on Thursday near the town of Hof in northern Bavaria.
In Solingen at the end of August, a Syrian attacked a city celebration, killing three and injuring eight people.
The attack sparked a new debate about Germany's attitude towards irregular migration.
