For the generations that grew up with two, maybe three television channels, it's hard to imagine, but it's true: Young people nowadays turn on the TV less and less to watch a program.
According to the new edition of research by the state media services ARD/ZDF, today 73 percent of Germans over the age of 14 regularly watch television programs.
At the same time, "regular" means at least once a week. The data indicates a constant decline in interest: in 2021 and 2022, the share of young people watching the TV program was 81 and 79 percent, respectively.
The differences by age group are huge. Thus, in the youngest group, 15-29 years old, only 48 percent regularly turn on the TV.
In the middle generation, 30-49 years old, 61 percent do it, and in the older generation, 50 to 69 years old, 87 percent. Among the oldest citizens, at least 70 years old, 95 percent regularly follow the TV program.
The situation is completely reversed when it comes to the consumption of content on YouTube.
The share of users in the youngest group is 78 percent, and among the oldest 10 percent.
By the way, these are just two segments of a regular, extensive study of media consumption in Germany. The research for the study, i.e. a survey of 2.500 citizens over the age of 14, was conducted by the GIM marketing institute.
