The British government changed its position today in the case of a boy suffering from epilepsy who, as his mother explained, needed cannabis oil to survive severe epileptic seizures.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid has approved 12-year-old Billy Caldwell to be allowed emergency treatment with the substance.
As he explained, he made the decision based on the advice of doctors who said that Caldwell was hospitalized, reports AP.
Javid said the UK government's priority was to ensure Caldwell received "the most effective and safe treatment possible".
Cannabis oil is banned in Britain. Authorities took him from the boy's mother, Charlotte Caldwell, when she tried to bring him into the country Monday from Canada.
She said that her son had two severe epileptic seizures and that cannabis oil was the only remedy that could prevent the boy's life-threatening seizures.
Caldwell welcomed the Interior Department's decision to work with her to find a solution to her son's health problem.
