Sue Gray, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff, resigned today, following recent criticism of tensions between her and Starmer's chief adviser Morgan McSweeney and news that she earns more than the prime minister.
The BBC reported that Gray's annual salary was 170.000 pounds (154.000 euros), which is about 3.000 pounds more than the annual salary of a British prime minister.
Gray said she had accepted the new role of Starmer's envoy for regions and nations, and it was McSweeney who would replace her as chief of staff in Downing Street.
"Throughout my career, my first interest has always been public service," Gray said in a statement. "However, in recent weeks it has become clear to me that a public debate about my position risks disrupting the vital work of government," she added.
Gray rose to prominence in 2022 when she led investigations into "Partygate" - allegations that former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his staff attended parties in government buildings, despite strict lockdown rules due to COVID-19. The investigation helped oust Johnson from power.
In recent weeks, Starmer has faced criticism over Gray's salary, as well as negative reports that he and his wife accepted gifts and other items worth thousands of pounds. He denied responsibility.
