A baby has died after a boat carrying people trying to cross the English Channel to Britain capsized off the French coast, local border officials said.
The incident took place on the night between Thursday and Friday when 65 people were rescued after an overloaded boat began to sink off the Visant coast in northern France, the Guardian reports. Some people were in the water when rescuers arrived. An unconscious baby was found in the water and later pronounced dead.
"Rescuers discovered that the boat, which was heavily laden, was in difficulty and that some people were in the water. Rescuers began to pull people out. At the same time, further searches continued to find people who may have been left behind in the sea," the local prefecture said.
In the last similar incident before this one, on October 5, a two-and-a-half-year-old child died along with three other people. Since the beginning of the year, at least 52 people have died trying to cross the English Channel.
