The High Representative of the European Union for foreign policy, Josep Borelj, said this evening that the European Intelligence Center confirmed to him reports about the presence of North Korean soldiers on Russian soil as "support for Russia's illegal war". As reported by the European diplomatic service EEAS, Borelj assessed that the presence of "several thousand soldiers" of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea who "cooperate with the Russian army" represents a "flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and several resolutions of the United Nations Security Council."
This, Borelj added, is also a "unilateral act of hostility" by North Korea, which carries with it "serious consequences for the peace and security of Europe and the world."
"North Korea must stop supporting Russia's war efforts. Continued military support for Russia's war aggression against Ukraine will be met with an appropriate response," Borelj said, according to the EEAS.
According to him, the European Union is coordinating with international partners regarding this problem, and this includes the response to it.
Borelj announced that this week he is traveling to Japan and South Korea for a meeting with the heads of diplomacy of these two Far Asian countries, to which North Korea is the closest neighbor.
"My visit is a timely and important opportunity to consider these worrying developments. They violate the most fundamental principles in international relations to which the European Union and our friends in Japan and the Republic of Korea are most deeply committed. Recent events also show how intertwined the security issues of Europe and Indo-Pacific," said Borelj.
