The dramatic floods that occurred in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in the southeast of Spain caused at least 211 victims, according to the latest report published today by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The head of government stated that operations to search for missing persons are continuing.
Sánchez announced today the dispatch of 5.000 soldiers and another 5.000 policemen and gendarmes to help the residents.
More than 1.000 soldiers from the emergency response units were previously deployed to the devastated areas.
Most of the dead are in the region of Valencia, followed by the neighboring regions of Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia.
The number of people missing is unknown.
The Mediterranean coast of Spain is often hit by storms and floods in autumn, but floods of this scale have not been recorded for years.
Spain is still recovering from a severe drought and the parched land, with record high temperatures for this period of the year, has a hard time absorbing large amounts of water.
