The victory of Donald Trump in the elections in the United States of America on November 5 would force the European Union to adjust its position on the war in Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Sunday.
"Europe cannot bear the burden of war alone, and if the Americans move to peace, then we must also adapt, and we will discuss this in Budapest," Orban said, according to a Reuters report, Politiko reports.
Orbán also reiterated his support for Trump ahead of Tuesday's election, which pits the former US president against incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris.
Stressing that Trump's victory is something that "I not only believe in, but also read the numbers," the Hungarian leader said that "we (in Europe) have to understand that if there is a president in America who supports peace ... then Europe cannot remain behind war.”
Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine "very quickly" if he wins the election, thanks to his "very good relationship" with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The former US president promised this at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on September 27.
Addressing supporters at a rally in Michigan on Saturday, Trump complained that the US is “taking advantage of all countries around the world, including allies.
"And in many cases, our allies are worse than our so-called enemies," he added.
On Thursday, Orban wrote on social media that he had a phone conversation with Trump in which he wished the Republican candidate "the best of luck" in the elections, reports N1.
