The decision to confirm the politician from Hungary, Oliver Varhelji, as the new European Commissioner for Animal Health and Welfare has been postponed, said the spokesperson of the European Parliament today, Reuters reports.
In September, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, nominated her candidates for positions in the executive body of the European Union, following the June elections for the European Parliament.
All candidates are questioned by members of the European Parliament, who have to approve their nominations, and during the conversation with them they try to extract various promises from them.
Varhelji, who is currently the European Commissioner for Enlargement, is one of the candidates expected to be under pressure and special attention as he is questioned by MPs.
The spokesperson did not explain why the decision was delayed, nor when it is expected.
Hungary is increasingly isolated within the European Union due to Prime Minister Viktor Orban's ties to Russia and Orban's opposition to sending military aid to Ukraine.
Orban's self-proclaimed "peace mission" greatly upset European Union leaders in July, when he went to Kiev and Moscow without informing the European Union or NATO.
