A volcano near Iceland's capital erupted for the 10th time in three years, spewing waterfalls of lava and smoke, the country's meteorological office said, but there were no disruptions to air traffic or infrastructure.
Iceland, with a population of nearly 400.000, sits on a fault line between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, making it a seismic hotspot with geysers, hot springs and dozens of volcanoes, Reuters writes.
Social media footage from the area showed glowing hot lava in bright yellow and orange hues.
The first signs of an eruption were recorded just 45 minutes before a huge underground fissure, now estimated to be about three kilometers long, opened, allowing magma to make its way through the earth's crust, the Icelandic Meteorological Office reported, N1 reports.
