Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he would invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Hungary, saying he would guarantee that the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Netanyahu "will not be respected," reports Reuters.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) yesterday issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense chief Yoav Galant, as well as Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict.
Orban, whose country holds the presidency of the European Union for a six-month cycle, told state radio that the ICC's arrest warrant was "wrong" and that Netanyahu will be able to conduct negotiations in Hungary "in adequate security."
"Today I will invite the Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. Netanyahu, to visit Hungary and in that invitation I will guarantee him that, if he comes, the ICC verdict will have no effect in Hungary and we will not monitor its content," said Orban.
Since Orban and his nationalist Fidesz party came to power in 2010, he and Netanyahu have established close political relations, the British agency recalls.
Netanyahu visited Budapest in 2017.
