Police in Berlin announced that today they detained a man who wounded several people with a knife around noon in the otherwise peaceful neighborhood of Charlottenburg.
The police said that two people are in the hospital and that the officers are interviewing witnesses.
The police said that they could not yet say how many people were wounded, nor could they provide details about the attacker.
The Bild tabloid reported that the man appeared to attack people at random, and the Berliner Zeitung reported that several bystanders pounced on him and overpowered him before the police arrived.
Germany is reeling from a deadly attack on a Christmas market this month in the eastern city of Magdeburg, where five people were killed and more than 200 wounded. A doctor, an immigrant from Saudi Arabia, was arrested for this.
