Activists from the international environmental organization Greenpeace organized a short protest against climate change on Tuesday outside the main hall of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where business and political leaders gathered.

Three protesters entered the Convention Center and stepped onto the lobby balcony before unfurling a large banner that read: "Tax the super-rich. Fund a just and green future."

Security intervened and removed the protesters, just before the official opening ceremony and speech by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

A source familiar with the situation said the protest did not pose a security threat and that the activists had badges for the event, as they worked for one of the organizers.

Greenpeace activist Clara Thompson later told Reuters that three protesters had been released after being detained at a police station in Davos following the protest.

"They had their own ways and means, I can't say more," Thompson said when asked how they got into the event.

The World Economic Forum said in a statement that it "respects the right to peaceful expression," adding that it was reviewing the issue and placing "the highest priority on ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants and staff."

During the forum in Davos, where one of the main topics for discussion this week is "saving the planet", strict security measures are in place.

Demonstrators protesting fossil fuel subsidies sprayed green paint outside a store where Amazon has set up a temporary base on Main Street on Monday.
