Tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Germany to protest against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, calling for a blockade of the political formation accused of threatening democracy.
The largest rallies were held in Berlin and Cologne, where around 35.000 and 20.000 people gathered, according to police data, while organizers said there were around 100.000 protesters in the capital.
Those gathered lit up their mobile phones as darkness fell, carrying signs reading "More light for democracy," "Resistance," "AfD is not an alternative," and "Nazis out."
Several organizations have called for rallies in 60 cities, four weeks before early parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23rd.
The AfD is in second place in polls for the parliamentary elections with around 20 percent support, behind the conservative CDU/CSU, which is supported by around 30 percent of respondents.
At the same time, an AfD support rally was held in the city of Halle today, at which American billionaire Elon Musk, who has supported the party, spoke via video link.
