The crackdown on protests in Georgia is unacceptable, and the European Union (EU) stands with the Georgian people in their fight for freedom and democracy, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kalas.
She stated on the social network X that the brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters, journalists and politicians in Tbilisi was unacceptable, Anadolu reports.
"Georgia is not meeting expectations for a candidate for membership. The EU stands with the people of Georgia in their struggle for freedom and democracy," wrote Kalas.
Georgian police arrested several people on Sunday after clashing with pro-European protesters who tried to block the road connecting the center of Tbilisi with the western part of the capital.
Chanting anti-government slogans, the demonstrators demanded the release of those detained and arrested in the first weeks of the protests.
Despite police warnings, protesters briefly blocked the road, leading to clashes with riot police.
Several protesters were detained during the clashes.
Georgia was granted candidate status for EU membership in December 2023, and the government postponed accession negotiations until 2028.
Protests against Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's decision to suspend EU membership negotiations until 2028 have been ongoing since November 28 last year.
