The Russian military launched a missile attack on Kiev early this morning, Ukrainian officials announced.
"This is how Putin wants to end the war. Russia has carried out a missile attack on Kiev and its surroundings," announced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person was killed and several fires broke out in residential and non-residential buildings.
Several people were injured, including a nine-year-old girl in the Obolon district, after a rocket hit an office building, Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported.
Two of the injured ended up in hospital, but the severity of their injuries is unknown.
The airstrike warning only came on at the very beginning of the attack, suggesting that Ukrainian defenses were unable to detect the attack with radar in time, Reuters reports.
It is not yet officially known which missiles the Russian military used on this occasion.
Preliminary reports indicate that four Iskander ballistic missiles were fired towards the capital, reports the Kyiv Independent.
Reuters reporters reported numerous explosions that sounded like Ukrainian air defenses.
A large fire engulfed a 600 square meter warehouse in the Holosiivskyi district, while a fire broke out on the roof of an apartment building in the Solomianskyi district, reports the Kyiv Independent.
The explosions were reported this morning at around 4:30 a.m. local time.
The Ukrainian Air Force had warned shortly before of the threat of Russian missile attacks aimed at various regions of the country.
The air warnings were lifted about an hour later, at 5:30 a.m. local time.
