The widow of the Kremlin's main opponent, Alexei Navalny, called last night in Berlin for the mobilization of Russian exiles to carry the "voice" of their compatriots, expressing hope for a quick end to President Vladimir Putin's rule.
"We must go out and protest 'for those in Russia who cannot do it,'" Yulia Navalny said at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of her husband's death.
"Let's be their voice because the Russians who stayed in the country are afraid they will end up in prison," she said.
She expressed her wish for "President Vladimir Putin's regime to end as soon as possible so that she can return to Russia and build a normal life in her country."
More than 1.000 Navalny supporters gathered at his grave in Moscow yesterday, despite the risk of legal action.
In a short speech at the cemetery, Alexei Navalny's mother, Lyudmila, said she wanted those responsible for her son's "murder" to be "punished."
"The whole world knows who ordered it. We want those who enabled it, those who committed it, to be revealed," said Lyudmila Navalnya.
The Russian judiciary has declared Navalny an "extremist".
