The leaders of four political groups representing the majority of elected members of the European Parliament (EP) called today for a "redoubled effort" in defending Ukraine and European security.
"Europe can no longer depend solely on the US to defend its values and common interests," said a rare joint statement from leaders of the right, left, environmentalists and the center.
Faced with the US-Russian diplomatic offensive to end the war in Ukraine, "the European Union and its member states have no choice but to act immediately," the statement said.
The announcement of the opening of negotiations between Washington and Moscow on the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine hit many European leaders hard, worried that they would not be included.
According to the leaders of four groups of MEPs, it is necessary to "face the new reality and redouble efforts to defend Ukraine and European security."
"Our groups are aware of the urgency and the need to react quickly to provide the necessary resources for our defense policy," the statement said.
