Far-right Romanian populist Calin Đorđescu, the winner of the annulled first round of the presidential election in Romania in November, has been stopped in traffic and taken to the Prosecutor's Office for questioning, his team announced today.
It is not yet known why Đorđescu (62) was detained, nor whether he has been charged with anything.
His team wrote that Đorđescu was detained while on his way to file his candidacy for the presidential re-election.
Gheorgheescu's victory in the first round of the presidential election in November, followed by allegations of Russian interference in the process, led to the Constitutional Court's unprecedented decision to annul the election just two days before the second round on December 8th.
Georgescu claimed that the elections were "illegally and unconstitutionally annulled" and that he had not done anything prohibited.
The first round of the re-election is scheduled for May 4. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a second round will be held two weeks later, on May 18.
