German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's willingness to negotiate peace with Russia, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced today, dpa reported.
In a phone conversation, Scholz and Zelensky agreed on the importance of US President Donald Trump's leadership role in the effort for a ceasefire agreement and lasting peace.
Hebestreit said the first step should be to stop air and naval strikes and attacks on civilian energy infrastructure.
Zelensky previously expressed his willingness to begin negotiations on a just peace as soon as possible.
Trump invited him to do so when they met at the White House last Friday. However, that meeting turned into a confrontation between Trump and Zelensky in front of the cameras.
European Union leaders will discuss the response to the consequences of all this in Brussels on Thursday.
Hebestreit said that Scholz confirmed Germany's unwavering solidarity with Zelensky.
He promised German support in coordination with European and international partners "for as long as necessary for a just, comprehensive and lasting peace."
Germany has sent more aid to Ukraine in the three years since the Russian invasion than any other country except the United States (US).
